So, for you youngsters out there, Stardew Valley is an amalgam of features from the Harvest Moon series and its spin-off, Rune Factory. Here's a list of gameplay features in Stardew Valley along with the HM or RF games they originally appeared in: Basic Farming/Day-to-Day System: Harvest Moon (SNES, 1996) Foraging: Harvest Moon (SNES, 1996) Crops: Harvest Moon (SNES, 1996) Giant Crops: Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon (DS, 2006) Weather: Harvest Moon (SNES, 1996) (Plantable) Trees: Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life (Gamecube, 2003) Seasons: Harvest Moon (SNES, 1996) Dog: Harvest Moon (SNES, 1996) - Get on the 5th of Spring from a lady. I'm so excited for this post. I've only played the older HM games, so when I saw people on this subreddit saying that pretty much everything in SDV is from one HM or another, I thought I'd have to go play them all myself to figure out which.
Thank you so much for compiling this. Edit.but what about pigs (looks like maybe Magical Melody?) and rabbits?
Edit again: I think what strikes me most about this list is just how much comes straight from the original Harvest Moon. If I read this and hadn't played it, I'm pretty sure my reaction would be like 'wait, really? All this stuff was in the very first SNES game?' Harvest Moon is awesome.
I like the way NPC's work in that game. Each one has a personality and a special nickname for you. It has the advantage over HM and SDV's static NPC's in that it has a TON of NPC's and they can randomly move into or out of town. I gotta say that I prefer Animal Crossing's zany dialogue and goofier characters. Also, did you know that in Animal Crossing it uses a software voice to actually read the text? It's just really sped up so you have to listen closely. I don't know about New Leaf, I've only played the original and Wild World.
